If the truth be known, I hate BMW as a brand, they tried to destroy Rover and now only exist and survive on reputation alone, the cars they produce don't have the quality of the older vehicles and they are very over rated cars, however, there are two models in the BMW range that warrant a further look, the E28 and the E24. Both produced in the late 70's and mid to late 80's, when BMW produced cars of quality, nowadays they produce cars with all the quality of a Ford, they have lost their way, become disillusioned. One reason they bought Rover, they were producing cars better than BMW!!! You only have to look at the late Mk1 and Mk2 800's to see that these are very nicely screwed together and finished cars, but two BMW's have a place in my life, both for quality, 70's appeal and good looks, the 1981-1988 BMW 5 series and the 1978 - 1989 BMW 6 series.
The 6 series has a kind of pimp daddy image to it, it's currently a vehicle I desire, it is in competition with the Jaguar XJS as a grand tourer I would like, ideally I would like to have both of them! The 6 was produced when BMW knew how to build cars, engineered like a tank, very fast, very luxurious (for a BMW) and built regardless to cost, if you owned a 6 series, you knew you had made it, only people with serious money could own these motors, they can now be picked up for under a grand.
I recently acquired a BMW 528i free of charge, it uses the excellent M30 six engine, along with the Honda V6, these are two engines that will last and last and last. My example is a little tatty in places but I cannot complain for free. I am in the process of completing some gearbox work at the moment, the front end seal on the box had perished and needed replacing, it is being done at the moment. The car is by no means a replacement for my Rovers but it is filling a space left vacant by the sale of my Mercedes 200 W123 series, she has a host of equipment ranging from electric windows and mirrors to some form of very 70's Vehicle Condition monitor. Plans for her include the fitment of some nice wheels and much general tidying, appart from which, she is in very good condition for a 14 year old car. PHOTO COMING SOON

Information on the models available, what's an M10, M20? it's here.......
Problems and fixes, well, problems, and their bodges! These cars ain't without their inherent design faults, here's some problems and fixes for the E24 and E28
I have found a distinct lack of any good E28 sites on the net, though there are exceptions, seems when your bimmer goes wrong, you take it to the dealer, sod that, here's some useful Haynes manual pages you may want to peruse.
Some pictures of the E24 and E28, also a list of reasons I like the looks of the respective vehicles.
